US Veteran Hero of the Month: LTC Jack Staples, U.S. Army (1966–2008)

This month, American Legion Post 214 proudly honors Lieutenant Colonel Jack Staples as our Veteran Hero of the Month—a man whose life reflects unwavering dedication to country, community, and the values that define true American service.
A Journey That Began at 19
Originally from Whitemarsh, Maryland, Jack answered the call to serve at just 19 years old, beginning a military journey that would span over four decades. He entered the U.S. Army in 1966, starting in Field Artillery before advancing into the elite ranks of Special Forces. In 1970, he achieved one of his greatest passions—becoming a helicopter pilot, a role he describes as his favorite part of being in the Army.
Training, Excellence, and Leadership
Jack completed Basic Training at Fort Jackson, South Carolina, followed by AIT and Officer Candidate School at Fort Sill, Oklahoma. His career reflects versatility, courage, and a relentless commitment to mastering every role he took on.
He retired from the Army Reserves in 1995, but when his country needed him again, Jack didn’t hesitate—he was recalled to service in 2005, demonstrating once more the depth of his loyalty and patriotism.
A Legacy of Service Beyond Uniform
Jack’s dedication didn
’t end with military retirement. He has been a cornerstone of American Legion Post 214, serving as:
- Finance Officer (2009–2014)
- Commander (2014–Present)
- District Commander 2025
Under his leadership, Post 214 has grown stronger, more unified, and more committed to serving veterans and the community. His steady guidance, integrity, and compassion have shaped the Post into the thriving organization it is today.
A Life Filled With Family, Love, and Resilience
Jack’s personal life reflects the same strength and heart he brought to his service. He shared five loving years with his fiancée, Judy, until her passing in December 2025—a loss felt deeply by all who knew them.
He is a proud father
of one daughter and one son, a grandfather to four, and a great‑grandfather to one great‑grandson. He also has one half‑sister, and of course, his loyal dog Buddy, who remains a constant companion.
Craftsmanship, Creativity, and Community
Outside of his military and Legion commitments, Jack enjoys woodworking and building projects, creating pieces that reflect the same precision and care he brought to his service. His craftsmanship is admired by many and serves as another way he contributes to those around him.
